BikeBeacon, by CycleBe
Hardware-centric location beacon for bicycle riders, broadcasting realtime geospatial data.

Cyclebe originated as a digital service for bicycle riders operating in a crowded ecosystem of sports and tracking applications. To achieve meaningful differentiation in performance, accuracy, and reliability, Cyclebe explored the development of a dedicated smart hardware solution in the form of a bicycle-mounted location beacon.
The challenge extended beyond device design. It required evaluating whether a physical product, tightly integrated with geo-spatial cloud services, could unlock value that mobile-only solutions could not, while introducing new complexities in manufacturing, lifecycle management, and cost.
The challenge
Is dedicated hardware the right path to differentiation in a market dominated by software-only sports and fitness platforms?
The solution
Hardware product management effort, defining a system architecture that broadcasts bike's location beacon to cloud-based geo-spatial services. We explored device-cloud integration, performance and power constraints, and the trade-offs between hardware capabilities and platform scalability.
This work resulted in a clear product direction for a hybrid hardware-cloud solution, establishing when dedicated hardware could strengthen the Cyclebe offering and how to manage the risks of moving from a purely software-based service to a smart physical product.
